Brisbane police confirmed on Thursday morning that they are actively reviewing possible gang connections in the fatal shooting at a local pub. The inquiry intensified after Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau died at Princess Alexandra Hospital. She was 19 years old and from Jimboomba. The 19-year-old sustained injuries to her head and neck during the incident on Saturday night.
The attack occurred outside Fitzy's Loganholme in the city's south. Masked gunmen fired into a crowd while the venue hosted a boxing event. Three men, aged 27, 37, and 38, were also transported to the hospital. One patient underwent surgery and remains in recovery. The other two men have been released from care.
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin told reporters that roughly 80 officers are working on the case. He described the victim as being in the prime of her life when she went out with friends. Galpin stated that her life was taken in a cowardly manner. He urged community members with information to step forward and speak to investigators.
The detective noted that the victim's family is asking for privacy during this difficult period. Galpin said the family is not doing well and is enduring significant hurt. He promised that the investigation would continue until the responsible parties are identified and taken into custody.
Regarding the gang angle, Galpin said police are keeping an open mind on the motive. If the inquiry identifies gang members, associates, or other organized crime figures, the scope of the investigation will expand. Detectives are currently searching for the individuals who fired the shots.
