The National Basketball Association Cup campaign commenced with a decisive victory for the Boston Celtics on Friday night. The team from Massachusetts defeated the Chicago Bulls by a score of 125 to 111 at TD Garden.
Boston established a commanding lead during the first half, outscoring Chicago by 29 points in that span. The Celtics converted 21 of their first 24 two-point attempts, demonstrating high efficiency on simple drives and cuts. Payton Pritchard played a central role in this early surge, securing two steals and converting a putback after an offensive rebound.
Coach Joe Mazzulla engaged in a brief conversation with Pritchard during a break in the first half. Mazzulla later described the interaction as a challenge for the guard to be more impactful on defense and in rebounding. Pritchard acknowledged the instruction, noting that Mazzulla embraced him after he executed the defensive plays and converted the rebound. Pritchard finished the game with 30 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. He also contributed to the early scoring, including an uncontested layup and a drive to the basket in the first minute of play. The Celtics shot 51.2 percent from the field throughout the contest. Paul George added to the offensive output, facilitating for Tatum and scoring on a drive early in the game.
The Chicago Bulls struggled to contain the Celtics' penetration. Rookie Caleb Wilson led the visitors with 23 points. The team had a difficult week, having been outscored by 49 points across two games at TD Garden. Mitchell Robinson contributed to the Bulls' scoring with a 3-point play after Chicago gathered three consecutive offensive rebounds late in the first quarter.
Mazzulla stated that the game showcased the best version of Pritchard, noting that the guard's energy and two-way play help the team reach a higher level. He added that while such intensity cannot be sustained every night, Pritchard's growth is beneficial. Pritchard mentioned that he has been reviewing film to improve his rebounding and boxing out, aiming to be a defensive nuisance who draws illegal screens.
Center Neemias Queta commented on Pritchard's shooting, specifically his step-back three-pointer early in the second quarter. Queta said that once Pritchard finds his range with difficult threes, he becomes a difficult player to stop. The guard hit a three-pointer after a step-back move, prompting a reaction from the Boston bench before the shot went in.
Pritchard experienced a brief slump, missing three consecutive three-pointers, but the Celtics maintained momentum. They forced 13 turnovers in the first half, which helped extend their lead. The game ended with Boston holding a 26-point margin. The Celtics have won four games in a row since their opening-day loss to the Pistons.
The next scheduled event for the Celtics will be determined by the league schedule, following this 125-111 victory in their NBA Cup opener.
