A Clippers supporter who challenged LeBron James to a shooting contest on Friday night missed four free throws in a row after mocking the star's age. The incident occurred during an intermission segment at the Intuit Dome, where the fan told the crowd he felt good and was ready to show a 40-year-old how it is done. He then stepped onto the court to attempt his shots.
The fan's performance did not match his confidence. He appeared off-balance before his first attempt, stumbling on the hardwood. It took him four tries to score his first basket. He then moved to the front left side of the key, where he missed three consecutive shots. The video recording of the segment ended before he could attempt a final throw.
The clip quickly gained traction on social media. Shane00 uploaded the footage to X with the caption, "Perfect representation of LeBron haters." Within six hours, the post accumulated 184,700 views, 2,800 likes, and 298 saves. Commenters piled on the fan's misfortune. IshbakaTheDemon wrote, "I mean that is how 40 year is supposed to do it buddy was not wrong." Alagie04 agreed, stating, "He's right that's how a 40 year old is supposed to do it." Vaslive12 added a nod to history, noting, "Well, to be fair, he did look like LeBron in that Heat-Mavs series."
The fan walked away from the court as the Clippers lost the game 125-117. The defeat compounded the evening's awkward moments for the home crowd. Austin Reaves led the Lakers' offense, sparking a 16-4 run in the third quarter that sealed the result.
James is currently in his 24th NBA season with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Clippers and Lakers rivalry has cooled in recent years, with the teams facing off in a low-scoring affair compared to their historical clashes. The 76ers forward is averaging 16.3 points, 7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in his first three games with the new team.
The fan's challenge took place during a standard promotional break, a common fixture in NBA broadcasts designed to engage the home audience. The free-throw line was set up near the right corner of the rim for the segment. The fan's initial stumbling and subsequent missed attempts became the focal point of the viral reaction, with users comparing his form to James' own shooting mechanics during the 2011 NBA Finals.
