Tensions rose sharply in North Texas politics this week after federal agents arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney on suspicion of plotting to assassinate U.S. Rep. Keith Self. The teen, whose identity has not yet been released, is accused of coordinating a plan to target the Republican lawmaker during a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. This event was to feature former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests, making the potential threat a significant disruption to the local political calendar.
Rep. Self, who is currently seeking a third term representing Texas' third congressional district, confirmed the details of the plot to NBC 5. His campaign managers stated that the FBI apprehended the suspect on October 5. The congressman's team did not learn of the arrest until the following day, October 6, when U.S. Capitol Police informed them of the development. Investigators believe the teen had been radicalized and was under federal surveillance prior to the detention.
According to the campaign, authorities told them the suspect was also planning a broader terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS, with Self as a specific target. The alleged plot centered on the October 17 fundraiser, a event designed to honor veterans. Despite the seriousness of the accusation, the congressman maintained a steady public presence, noting that he had received threats in the past but that this was the first time an arrest followed a specific plot against him.
Self described his response as measured, citing his background in military combat zones. He noted that while some might panic upon learning of an assassination plot, his experience allowed him to remain calm. He focused on determining if the suspect was a lone wolf or part of a larger group. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also supported the family's approach to the situation, taking the risks involved with professional familiarity.
The congressman stated that his security detail increased their situational awareness immediately after learning of the arrest. He emphasized that while they had plenty of security in place, they adjusted their profile and remained vigilant during the early voting period across the state. This heightened alertness was part of a broader strategy to ensure safety without letting the threat disrupt the campaign's momentum.
Despite the looming threat, Self attended the chili cook-off as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans, describing the experience as delightful and noting that nothing happened. He has continued his campaign activities, including poll greeting and meeting with voters, asserting that the incident will not deter him from alerting the American public to the political ideologies he opposes.
The plot unfolds against a backdrop of significant political activity in Self's district. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This stance has placed him at the center of local debates, particularly in McKinney, where plans for a new mosque have drawn considerable attention and contentious public comment.
In August, the McKinney City Council unanimously approved a site plan for expansion at a local mosque, stating that the plans complied with city development rules. The decision followed hours of public debate and was later followed by an effort to recall several council members. This local context adds a layer of complexity to the national political landscape in which Self operates.
Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the midterm election, condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post, signaling a moment of bipartisan concern. The FBI Dallas office has been reached for additional information but has not yet responded. As the investigation continues, the teen remains in custody, and the congressional race proceeds with a heightened sense of security and public attention.
The incident highlights the intersection of local community issues and national security concerns in high-profile congressional districts. As early voting continues, both the candidate and his team are focused on maintaining their message while managing the logistical and emotional challenges of a perceived threat. The coming weeks will likely see increased scrutiny on both the campaign's security protocols and the broader political dynamics in Texas' third district.
