European soccer saw a shift in power across three major leagues this weekend.
Lazio moved to the top of the Serie A table with a 2-1 victory over Cagliari on Sunday.
The result came after defending champion Inter Milan lost its match against AC Milan on Saturday.
This loss allowed Lazio to open a three-point lead at the summit of the Italian league.
The team needed a late strike to secure the points and reach a historic milestone.
Forward Andrea Pinamonti scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute.
He entered the game as a second-half substitute and removed his jersey in celebration after the strike.
Gustav Isaksen equalized for Lazio near the end of the first half.
Cagliari had taken an early lead when forward M’Bala Nzola scored in the 21st minute.
The win gives Lazio nine victories and one draw in its first ten league matches.
Standings records confirm this is the best start in the club’s history.
In other Italian action, Como defeated Venezia 1-0 to hold the fourth position in the table. Midfielder Lucas Da Cunha converted a penalty in the first half for the home side. Venezia remains at the bottom of the league standings. Juventus beat Napoli 2-0 at home to stay in seventh place. Kerim Alajbegovic scored in the 70th minute and Jeremie Boga added a goal in the 87th minute for the win. The German Bundesliga featured a record-setting appearance for Frankfurt teenager Niko Iličević. He came on during stoppage time to help his team beat Hamburg 3-1. At 16 years and 1 day old, Iličević matched Youssoufa Moukoko for the youngest player in Bundesliga history. Frankfurt had defeated the same opponent 3-1 in the German Cup earlier in the week. In France, Lyon climbed to third place in the league standings. The team beat Angers 2-0 at home with goals from Ernest Nuamah and Corentin Tolisso. Paris FC defeated Monaco 3-1 to remain just behind Lyon on goal difference. Monaco’s Folarin Balogun scored for the visitors. In the Netherlands, FC Twente crushed Excelsior 9-0. Wout Weghorst scored four goals and Sondre Orjasaeter provided five assists in the rout. In Scotland, Falkirk defeated Celtic 2-0.
