New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry suffered a foot injury during the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins. He walked to the locker room after a brief visit to the sideline medical tent and did not return for the remainder of the contest. The team officially ruled him out midway through the fourth quarter.
Henry's absence left the Patriots with a severely limited receiving corps. Wide receivers A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, and Mack Hollins, along with running back TreVeyon Henderson and offensive linemen Mike Onwenu and Alijah Vera-Tucker, all missed the game due to injuries. This left quarterback Drake Maye with only seven available pass catchers in the first half.
The scarcity of reliable targets was evident in the early stats. Henry accounted for 30 yards on his first three targets, which represented more than half of Maye's first-half passing output. Maye completed four of seven passes for 23 yards to other players before halftime. The offense later found success when Maye connected with Kyle Williams and DeMario Douglas for two long touchdown passes.
Henry enters this stretch as the Patriots' leader in catches with 26, receiving yards with 296, and catch rate at 83.9%. He had a perfect game the previous week against the Bears, catching all seven targets for 71 yards. He is the second-longest-tenured player on the roster, a status he shares with no one other than Onwenu.
Maye noted the emotional difficulty of losing a teammate who often plays through adversity. "It's always tough losing Hunt," Maye said. "I saw him when he got up from the catch. I was worried about him.. He seems fine in here. He seems like he's walking around fine, and he's got a smile on his face, so he's always Hunt."
Head coach Mike Vrabel praised the offensive staff for adapting to the lineup changes. "We're gonna, we missed Hunter," Vrabel said. "Certainly that leadership, his understanding in tough, close games, and he always seems to come up and make plays for us. So again, the guys were ready to go."
The Patriots won the road game 24-19. Rookie Eli Raridon caught one of four targets for five yards and dropped a pass in the fourth quarter. Blocking tight ends Tanner Arkin and Cameron Latu were not targeted. The team now faces the challenge of managing a depleted roster for the remainder of the season.
