Kimi Antonelli is the youngest Formula 1 champion in history.

The 20-year-old Mercedes driver clinched the World Championship on Sunday after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix. He finished behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli took the lead in the standings over teammate George Russell and Ferrari's Hamilton. His title comes with four races still left on the calendar. The previous record holder was Sebastian Vettel, who won the championship at age 23 in 2010. Antonelli is also the first Italian to claim the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Antonelli's path to the title began with a dominant season for Mercedes. The team's strategy paid off in Mexico, where they controlled the race rhythm. The Italian driver crossed the finish line to secure the points needed for the crown. His victory in the championship marks a milestone for his home country. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that Italy had waited 73 years for this moment. He stated that Antonelli's name now joins the legends of the sport. Domenicali added that a new chapter in F1 history has been written.

The Mexico City Grand Prix featured several interruptions and disputes. The race was halted on lap 46 when Valtteri Bottas crashed into the wall at the first corner. The red flag was called after issues with his right-side suspension. Cadillac reported that Bottas received further medical assessments as a precaution. The driver exited his car unaided and waved to the fans before leaving the track. The race restarted with Verstappen in the lead. He was followed by Charles Leclerc, Hamilton, Antonelli, Lando Norris, and Russell. Verstappen held off the field to win his sixth Mexico City race.

Tensions rose among Ferrari teammates during the event. Lewis Hamilton secured pole position on Saturday but lost it on the fourth lap. He battled Charles Leclerc for the lead and briefly went off track. This dropped Hamilton back to third place. Stewards investigated the maneuver between the two Ferrari drivers. They awarded Leclerc a five-second penalty. Hamilton expressed frustration with the decision. He said the stewards were handing Charles the win. Hamilton noted that Leclerc had clean air and did not have to manage the car like the others. He argued that Leclerc should have given the position back. Shortly before the red flag, Hamilton radioed that his team had big problems. He appeared visibly frustrated when pulling into the garage.

Aston Martin faced its own mechanical struggles. Fernando Alonso joked after qualifying that he would skip Mexico and go straight to Brazil. That nearly happened. Alonso was forced to retire early from the race. His teammate Lance Stroll exited on the seventh lap. This capped a difficult visit for the team. Alonso said he was told to retire the car due to an engine issue. He noted the car was fine during the first practice sessions. It failed in qualifying and then again in the race. Alonso said the team had reliability issues at the worst possible time.

Formula 1 heads to Brazil next. The season will then move to Las Vegas. It remains uncertain whether the final two Grands Prix will take place. These races are scheduled for Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Instability in the region has raised questions about their status.

Antonelli credited his team and family for his achievement. He said he was speechless while trying to process the result. He called it an incredible season. Verstappen's win in Mexico extends his record for that specific event. The championship picture is now set with Antonelli in the lead. The remaining races will determine the final standings for the other drivers.
