Erin Andrews described a chaotic sequence of events during the halftime coverage of the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions game on Sunday. The Fox sideline reporter said she was out of breath and out of time, leading to a physical reaction she later characterized as severe.
Andrews, 48, spoke on Tuesday's episode of the 'Calm Down' podcast with Charissa Thompson. She explained that she typically has time to ask two questions to a coach at halftime. However, the long ramp at Ford Field allowed her to spend more time with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. She asked four or five questions instead of the usual two.
When she returned to the field, she had approximately one minute before Fox went back on air. Andrews said she rushed to consolidate her notes and check a recording of her conversation with LaFleur. She realized she had not gathered information on team injuries just as her producer signaled that she would be the first on camera.
She ran to find the team public relations staff while co-hosts Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady remained on the air. Andrews said she eventually made it back to the camera in time but stumbled through her report. She cited LaFleur's comments that he was 'mad at himself' for not attempting a field goal on a fourth-and-four situation from the Detroit 7-yard line.
Andrews noted that Green Bay failed to convert on the play while trailing 10-7 in the second quarter. She said she was fully out of breath during the broadcast, which she described as inappropriate for the moment. She mentioned telling herself to breathe in through her nose and out through her mouth while trying to remember her notes.
The reporter said she accidentally announced the offense before finishing her thought about the defense. She told Burkhardt she would get it together after the play. Tom Brady responded on-air with 'Aww,' which Andrews said he does when he knows a colleague is struggling. She concluded by saying she felt she had soiled herself during the broadcast.
Andrews has worked as a sideline reporter for Fox for 14 years, joining the network in July 2012. Before that, she reported for the ESPN, covering the NHL, college football, and Big Ten basketball.
