Hellraiser: Universal Orlando's 35-Year Haunted House Returns

Visitors to Universal Orlando Resort will face a new threshold in the Hellraiser haunted house for Halloween Horror Nights 35. The attraction, which opened this year, places the Lament Configuration puzzle box at the center of the queue. Guests can choose to open the box and enter it directly, mirroring the narrative of the 1987 film. This design decision was driven by Clive Barker, who insisted the prop serve as an invitation rather than a static object.

Mike Aiello, Senior Director of Entertainment Creative Development, explained that Barker views the box as a literal doorway to the story. The exterior design by art director Cam Carbia features the device flayed open with embedded LED lights and chains. Inside, scenic designer Dylan Kollath built a labyrinth based on Barker's novella, The Hellbound Heart. The environment is described as having a disorienting quality that blends pleasure with pain.

Lora Sauls, Assistant Director of Entertainment, stated that Barker required the house to retain the sexual layer present in the films. She noted that the partnership ensured the teams did not remove this aspect of the character dynamics. The house features ten versions of Pinhead, including actors with pre-recorded lines voiced by Doug Bradley. These figures interact with guests alongside other Cenobites such as The Chatterer and Butterball.

The creative team utilized new projection technology from Universal's Epic Universe hotels for the first time in a haunted house. Sauls said the team wanted to test this hardware in a controlled environment. The set design includes spinning pillars, automated floating chains, and bloody candle-lit tombs. The audio track mixes sounds of pleasure and pain to match the visual themes.

Securing the rights to Hellraiser took the team two years after the license reverted to Barker. The process involved identifying the overall rights holder through merchandising contacts. This timeline contrasts with older properties like The Exorcist, where the single-location setting of the source material complicated the maze design. Aiello noted that adapting The Shining required navigating the differences between Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick's visions.

The Hellraiser house is part of a 35-year history of adapting literary horror at the park. Previous attractions have included The Psycho Path Maze, which debuted in 1993, and Nevermore: The Madness of Poe. The Poe house, which opened in 2011 when the author's works entered the public domain, focused on themes of guilt and obsession. Aiello described it as the only author-centric house in the event's history.

The team is currently exploring other literary properties for future iterations. Aiello mentioned Stephen King's Castle Rock as a potential subject, noting its connection to The Dark Tower. He stated that the park aims to balance rewarding existing fans with accessibility for new readers. The strategy extends to food and beverage offerings, including a Hellraiser-themed menu designed to be both horrifying and beautiful.
