Three men were hospitalized with injuries after Jordanian security forces raided their location on Monday morning. The operation followed a shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hammoud that occurred on Friday. Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya confirmed that the three suspects captured during the dawn shootout in Karak governorate are the individuals responsible for the attack.
The initial incident took place while a funeral was being held at the church. Al-Faraya told the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka that security services identified the suspects early on. He described the confrontation as intense, noting that the men put up fierce resistance before being subdued. All three suspects sustained severe injuries during the engagement, while no officers from the security forces were hurt.
Karak is located south of the capital, Amman, and contains a minority Christian population. The Public Security Directorate issued a statement describing the event as a terrorist act. The directorate stated that terrorism has no place among the population and declared that the men had met their just fate. The agency did not release the names of the suspects or identify any specific links to Islamist militant groups.
King Abdullah II responded to the violence by directing authorities to act with an iron fist. The monarch described the attackers as outlaws of Islam and individuals seeking to undermine the unity of the Jordanian people. No group has publicly claimed responsibility for the shooting, and no armed organization has been formally accused of carrying out the operation.
