Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is expected to start Monday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. The 2024 Offensive Player of the Year was listed as questionable with a hamstring injury but has moved to the active roster for the Week 7 matchup. His return provides a key boost to an offense that has struggled to generate momentum this season.

Barkley’s path back was gradual. He returned to practice as a limited participant on Thursday and Friday, then served as a full participant on Saturday. This progression followed two setbacks earlier in the year. He sustained a neck stinger during the Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans and pulled his hamstring in the first quarter of the Week 4 contest against the Los Angeles Rams. Since then, he has played on fewer than 16% of offensive snaps in half of his appearances.

The statistical difference between Barkley and his backups is stark. Barkley has averaged 5.1 yards per carry on 36 rushes this season. In comparison, all other Eagles running backs have combined for an average of 2.8 yards per rush on 71 attempts. Last week against the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles handed the ball to Dameon Pierce only 12 times, resulting in 35 yards and one touchdown. The return of the veteran runner aims to correct this inefficiency.

The Eagles enter this game with major absences in the skill positions. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the season after blood clots were discovered in his lungs. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith has also been ruled out with a hamstring injury. These injuries have contributed to a drop in offensive output. The team has averaged fewer than 4.0 yards per play for three straight games, a streak not seen since 1999. They are also out-gained by 108.3 total yards per game, the worst mark in the NFL.

Historical trends offer some optimism for the home crowd. The Eagles have won four straight home games against the Cowboys, tying for the second-longest such streak in franchise history. Additionally, the team has won seven of its past eight primetime games at home. This record suggests a strong defensive and special teams effort can carry the team even when the passing game is limited.

The game begins Monday night in Philadelphia. The Eagles will look to leverage Barkley's presence to stabilize the ground game. With the Cowboys visiting, the outcome will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike. The final score will determine the team's standing in the division heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
