Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday night, handing Hansi Flick's side a second defeat in four days. Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for the visitors. The result ended Barcelona's nine-game winning run in La Liga and denied them a chance to break Real's 1968-69 record for a best-ever start to a Spanish top-flight season. Barcelona had also lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier in the week.

Mbappe's two goals took his tally for the season to 14 and pushed his career total for Real Madrid to 100 across all competitions since he joined from Paris Saint-Gerfg in 2024. The 27-year-old is the second-highest scorer in La Liga this campaign. Last season he finished as top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League, won the World Cup Golden Boot, and became the all-time leading World Cup scorer. He is among the favourites for the Ballon d'Or, which will be awarded at a gala in London on Monday.

The win moved Real Madrid to 24 points from 10 matches, three points behind Barcelona in the table. Atletico Madrid sit second on 25 points. Real have now won five straight matches across La Liga and the Champions League, though this was only their second win in eight meetings with Barcelona. In the all-time Clasico record, Real lead 107 wins to Barcelona's 106.

Jose Mourinho, 63, took charge of his first Clasico since returning to the club. He previously managed Real Madrid for three seasons, winning the La Liga title in 2011-12, and left in 2013. Real turned to him after two seasons without trophies. He last won a league title with Chelsea in 2014-15.

Mourinho played down the result in comments after the match. "If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou," he said. "They're playing to win the championship." The next match for Real Madrid is at El Sardinero.
