An estimated 2 million spectators lined the streets of Lower Manhattan on Saturday, Oct. 31, to watch the 53rd annual New York Village Halloween Parade.
Approximately 80,000 participants in costume began the march at the corner of Canal Street and Sixth Avenue. The group moved westward toward West 16th Street in Greenwich Village.
Organizers selected "Body & Soul" as the theme for this year's event. The concept emphasized movement and dreams while honoring the Year of the Horse. The procession featured music, dance, and theatrical performances.
Director Spike Lee walked the route to film a specific segment of the event. He captured a troupe performing the dance from Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
Performers presented a mix of musical styles during the march. Groups performed funky disco numbers and routines inspired by the movie Miss Congeniality. A drumline dedicated to Dolly Parton joined the parade. Cultural tributes included musical nods to Día de los Muertos and a mariachi group led by a young singer who prompted onlookers to chant.
Floats carrying actors dressed as zombies and wrestlers from Subway Mania moved through the crowd. The parade ended around 11 p.m.
