The National Transportation Safety Board has ruled out any connection between a fatal plane crash in Florida and the nearby Mar-a-Lago estate.

Tom Chapman, an NTSB member, told reporters on Tuesday that the accident’s location was purely coincidental. The Learjet 60 crashed on Sunday, killing all nine people on board. The aircraft was flying from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when it hit a residential area in Palm Beach County. The crash site sits less than 10 miles from President Donald Trump’s home. Chapman dismissed questions about Secret Service operations affecting the flight path.

Recovery teams found a large piece of the left elevator between 1.3 and 3.8 miles from the impact zone. This tail component controls pitch, and its distance from the main wreckage suggests the plane broke apart in the air. Chapman noted that the speed of the fall likely prevented recovery even if the elevator had stayed attached. The crew had reported light clear ice and moderate turbulence at 35,000 feet. They asked to climb to 37,000 feet. Less than 30 seconds after receiving approval, they reported a descent and called a mayday. Dashcam footage from the area is being used to reconstruct these final moments.

About 600 residents near Military Trail and Cresthaven Boulevard were evacuated after the crash. John Jamason, a Palm Beach County spokesperson, said 40 to 50 people were sheltering at the Greenacres Community Center. Officials are seeking state funds to help displaced residents with housing and transportation. The county has not set a date for reopening the road or allowing residents to return. Military Trail remains closed in both directions between 10th Avenue North and Purdy Lane.

Among the victims were Adam Robinson, 45, and his wife Helen Sharp, 40. Robinson, a co-founder of Retention.com, was also traveling with their children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2. Robinson had posted on LinkedIn that day to announce his company reached $10 million in annual recurring revenue. He was scheduled to join a live business debate on Tuesday. The families described the couple as devoted parents who touched many lives with their warmth. Chapman expressed confidence that investigators would determine the cause of the accident. The specific cause remains undetermined as severe weather complicates the recovery. Updates will be posted on the NTSB website.

Investigators expect to find more small fragments buried in the waterlogged crater. They are draining the area to access the debris. Atmospheric conditions remain a primary focus of the ongoing investigation.
