The Baltimore County Police Department will patrol the homes of registered sex offenders on October 31. The force stated that agents will monitor residences where individuals have no-contact restrictions, according to a press release issued Wednesday.
The Maryland Division of Probation and Parole will coordinate with police during these rounds. Officials said the joint effort aims to verify legal compliance and protect community safety during the holiday.
Residents can check local offender databases via the Maryland Sex Offender Registry or the U.S. Department of Justice website. The police department provided specific guidance for the public on how to report potential violations.
Anyone who suspects a registered sex offender with a no-contact order is handing out candy should call the Sex Offender Registry Team. The direct line for reports is 410-887-7740.
Authorities also distributed safety recommendations for residents preparing for the holiday. Guidelines address costume selection, home decoration, and supervision of children.
Police advised selecting costumes that are bright and reflective. They recommended keeping garments short to prevent tripping and ensuring masks do not block vision. Reflective tape on costumes and candy bags is also suggested for visibility.
Officials urged families to buy costumes labeled flame-resistant or flameproof. For homemade outfits, they recommended using materials that do not catch fire easily. Decorations should use lanterns or LED lights rather than candles or incandescent bulbs.
Homeowners should avoid overloading electrical outlets and replace damaged extension cords. Exits must remain clear of decorations to ensure safe evacuation paths.
Parents should supervise children while they trick-or-treat. If pets accompany the group, reflective leashes are recommended. Children attending parties at unfamiliar homes should identify exits and plan an evacuation route in case of an emergency.
